Website Design For The WOW Awards

screenshot of web site design for: The WOW! Awards, Stevenage, Herts

www.thewowawards.com. The WOW! Awards recognise those companies that go further and deliver awesome service.

I have had a long running relationship with Derek Williams the man behind The WowAwards! I maintained all his websites for many years until it reached the point where he needed his own dedicated Web Master. So I helped Derek recruit a suitable candidate and helped train and guide him to take over the onward development of The WowAwards numerous web related projects.

"Hi Michael. - I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU! - Thank you for all your help with our websites. Since you and your team have taken over the management of our websites there has been a significant improvement in every aspect. Visually, the sites are much more attractive. In terms of content, they look much more professional. And, most importantly, in terms of our rankings with the search engines we have achieved a fantastic improvement! Whilst I appreciate your technical ability what I also really like is your down-to-earth business advice. Everything that you have recommended has been both practical and effective. And finally, you're such nice people to work with."

Website Design For NaCTSO London

screenshot of web site design for: The National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO), London

www.nactso.gov.uk. The National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) is a police unit co-located with the Centre for the Protection of the National Infrastructure (CPNI). They offer specialist advice regarding the security of explosives and pre-cursor chemicals (including fertilisers), pathogens and toxins, radiological sources and other toxic chemicals. They also provide guidance in relation to business continuity, designing out vehicle borne terrorism, the protection of crowded places and reducing opportunities for terrorism through environmental design.

There was a voice mail message for me - it said "This is Graham Smith, I work for The National Counter Terrorism Security Office within MI5. Don't worry, I would like to talk to you about your website design services ...." Well you don't get a phone call like that everyday!

Graham had a very strict set of guidelines that the website needed to follow, he wanted a professional design, following all the web standards but he was looking for the job to be done quickly with the minimum of fuss (rather than go through the normal processes associated with a Government based site. The website also had to be approved, as you can imagine, by a variety of key people. The website was up and running within 1 month.

I maintained the site monthly for a few years then in 2010 the Government machine caught up and brought the site "in-house" understandably in view of the subject of the site!

Website Designed For The Digital Office Henlow, Beds

screenshot of web site design for: The Digital Office, Henlow, Beds

www.thedigitaloffice.co.uk. The Digital Office wanted their website upgraded to improve results in the search engines.

We completely redesigned the website, incorporating the new company logo, removing the frames structure and enhancing the quality of the content on the website. We also ran a 6 month search engine optimisation project and assisted with their Google Adwords pay per click campaign. After a couple of months the site has started to show significant improvements in the search engine rankings and now after the campaign has stopped the site is still ranking highly as its position is now well established - try "digital office equipment beds" or "digital office equipment herts" in google.

"We were introduced to Epsilis, as a company that could increase potential customers visiting our web site, instead of having to contemplate spending a fortune on Marketing the site. We had become disillusioned with the internet and its place in our industry and even if we needed a web site at all. With the minimum of fuss and very little input from ourselves, we have seen a dramatic increase in visits to the new revised site over the first 3 months and have instantly made significant, additional, high value sales from these visits. Have a look at the site and see what you think."

Website Design For Redsky Solutions Hitchin, Hertfordshire

screenshot of web site design for: Redsky Solutions, Hitchin, Herts

Redsky Solutions are Accountants, Business Advisors and Tax Consultants in Hertfordshire with offices in Weston, Nr Hitchin and Stevenage.  They  provide a full range of accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, financial management, VAT, tax (business tax, employment tax and personal tax), payroll, management accounts and corporate finance advice services.

Paul Weller wanted a "down to business" website design that worked well in the search engine rankings with phrases like "accountants in herts" or "accountants in hertfordshire" or "business advisors hertfordshire" or "tax advisors in hertfordshire" being key targets in google. After many years of successfully building the colateral of www.resultsforbusiness.co.uk in the search engines Paul decided it was time to take his marketing strategy to the next level and put all his marketing in the hands of a specialist Accountancy communications agency who are able to keep up with the latest happenings in the accountancy and tax world. I now look after other websites in Pauls portfolio.

Website Designed For CNCF Rugby Tours

screenshot of web site design for: CNCF Rugby Tours, Dubai

www.cncf-rugbytours.com. CNCF (Christina Noble Children's Foundation) Rugby Tours is a charity organisation that exists to provide a unique, once in a lifetime rugby experience whilst raising money for the desperate plight of disadvantaged and orphaned children in Vietnam and Mongolia. The teams are made up of invited world class rugby players and they play at the annual Dubai Rugby 7's (Sevens) in November each year.

I designed a colourful web site designed with the teams shirt colours in mind, with lots of different images of famous rugby stars used in the header and footer of each page as well as within each page content plus some movies. All publicity for this annual event is now been taken over by an events management company.

"I am extremely grateful to Michael at Epsilis for his sterling work on the site over the last few years - there is no doubt part of the success of the CNCF team has been down to a slick website (with great photos!!)"

Epsilis worked to a tight deadline collaborating with the Zen Design company to ensure the new web site was ready to coincide with the launch of the HBIC Initiative by Lord Sainsbury.

As well as providing a clear, professional website to make an impact for the launch, content management was implemented into the web site to allow the HBIC staff to update news, events and text on all pages on the web site. Website Design For GB Personal Training London

screenshot of web site design for: GB Personal Training, Hampstead, London

www.gbpersonaltraining.com is a new enterprise for Greg Brookes. Greg is a Personal Training who provides a mobile Holistic Personal Trainer service in Hampstead, London. Greg says "Many people fail because they don’t address the body as a whole - GB Personal Training is different from most personal training companyies, I offer a complete holistic approach that enables you to truly reach your potential by addressing all of the key factors necessary for a fit and healthy life: Nutritional advice based on your metabolic type, Functional fitness training for daily life, Flexibility and postural realignment and Stress management. I will take you through these facets of health and fitness, at a pace that suits you and in a way that will accomplish your goals in the shortest time possible."

Greg wanted a small website he could make small amendments to himself, with a simple layout, large images and blue as the feature colour. He also wanted good search engine performance so we advised him on how search engines worked, the importance of keywords and phrases and drafting a suitable amount of text (at least 250 words) for each of his web pages. Greg created a list of keywords and drafted the website copy much as you see it on the website and with only minor amendments made by us to emphasise keywords. Greg also selected most of the photos used as the basis of the images you see on the website from an online source which is a good way of getting high quality photos cheaply for use on your website if you cannot provide them yourself.

The website design was straightforward HTML with all the presentation done using CSS to provide a fast accessible website that is search engine friendly. I organised the domain name and hosting arrangement on Greg's behalf. The whole project took just 3 weeks.

The key to successful search rankings in very competitive areas is lots of unique content that is changing often - Greg has taken this on board and after a good degree of success with his site decided that he wanted to take it to the next level with a blog based website. This is now what he has done.

" .... thank you Michael, I largely owe my business to your advice and help"

North Herts CENTRE For Voluntary Service Letchworth, Herts

screenshot of web site design for: NHCVS, Letchworth, Herts

www.nhcvs.co.uk. North Herts Centre for Voluntary Service (NHCVS) are a Charity who run various projects in the North Herts area. They provide advice on volunteering and funding, run the Furniture Link community project in Letchworth, run the Respite Playshemes in Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth amongst many other worthy projects.

Jacquie Hime, Director of NHCVS came to me after some bad experiences with trying to get their website done very cheaply. The website was incomplete and did not allow for accessibility requirements. There were also problems with the hosting and domain set up.

I redesigned and completely recoded the web pages to allow for accessibility requirements and to be more user friendly. I resolved the issues with the hosting and domains and the site was soon up and running. I have recently trained Jacquie and other NHCVS staff to maintain the site themselves which they are now actively doing.

"I am really impressed, I think it now looks really good. I will be showing the trustees on Monday just to see if there is anything they would like to add/comment on. Thank you so much for sorting everything out as I am aware that you had several mountains to climb to get us to this stage." Jacquie Hime Executive Director - North Herts CVS

Website Design For xpertex Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

screenshot of web site design for: Xpertex - Welwyn, Herts

www.xpertex.co.uk Xpertex provide ad-hoc IP Telephony, Network, Security and Infrastructure Services providing professional technical consultancy resources to the I.T sector

The core of their business is LAN/MAN/WAN infrastructure, Security, Convergence and Systems Infrastructure. Xpertex is comprised of a number of fully qualified and experienced IT consultants and technicians that provide ad-hoc technical resources to the IT sector. They provide on-demand design implementation and support services to major equipment manufacturers, hardware and software distributors, resellers and end users for both short-term assignments and long-term projects.

Joel Sweeney, Consultant for Xpertex, knew that search engine optimisation was the overriding requirement for the Xpertex website and that was his main reason for choosing us to develop his new company site. We therefore concentrated our efforts on getting the content right - we coached Joel on how to create content that appealed to people and was effective in search engines. Joel already had a corporate brand and we created a straight-forward search engine friendly design that echoes that brand around the content Joel produced.

Website Design For Allen Mezzanines Letchworth, Hertfordshire

screenshot of web site design for: Atten Mezzanines - mezzanine floors, Letchworth, Herts

www.allenmezzanines.co.uk. Allen Mezzanines build tailor made mezzanine floors and raised platforms for commercial offices and industrial work places, warehouses, factories and homes.

Nigel Allen approached me as his previous web design company had let him down. He had a new site designed but it had not been completed and was also having trouble sorting out his domains and web space. I took a look at the design and it was clear that search engine optimisation, which was one of Nigels key requirements, did not play any part in the redesign but some fancy flash animations did. Nigel and I decided it was best to start again from first principles, look at search engine target keywords and phrases, build some content from these, then build a search engine friendly design to suit. The site also features a lot of pictures of the raised mezzanine floors that Allen Mezzanines have built.

"We have already had some nice enquiries from the site, so it is definitely working. Have also had some compliments about the site. Thanks for your help."

Website Design For Park Side Leisure Hatfield, Hertfordshire

screenshot of web site design for: Park Side Leisure (SeViC), Hatfield, Herts

www.parksideleisure.co.uk Parkside Leisure Company – products developed by caravaners for Caravaners. They supply a range of goods for the leisure industry focused around 12 Volt systems, including the industry leading TV DVD combo unit and the Wavebox, the worlds first portable microwave.

This project was a little different to most in that Matt Savill of SeViC Systems had just bought a new website for his Parkside Leisure Company but was very unhappy with what he had so he asked me if I could help him sort it out. The site is an online shop based on a template system with a built in Content Management System (CMS) to edit content, products and customers. Matt wanted the look of the site changed and search engine optimisation features added. Only limited improvements to the background online shop system were feasible but it was possible to radically alter the look of the site, make some SEO improvements and provide some guidance on how best to use the CMS to update the pages and products to improve search engine rankings.

Website Design For Telecoms Pricing

screenshot of web site design for: Tariff Consultancy Limited, London

www.telecomspricing.com "Tariff Consultancy Limited research, analyse and benchmark telephony, broadband and mobile prices ... focused on pricing and tariff research, analysis and consultancy across mobile operator businesses internationally. The website is the resource centre for information, data, analysis, reports, studies, consultancy, research, symposia and events related to fixed and mobile pricing."

Margrit Session, Managing Director, wanted a new website developed that she could update regularly herself having been frustrated by waiting for her site to be updated by her previous web designers. The website uses the open source DRUPAL content management system as its base, includes a simple implementation of the UBERCART ecommerce shopping software and search engine optimisation modules (try "mobile pricing reports" or "Telecoms Pricing Tariffs Information" or "telecoms pricing information" or "mobile pricing reports"). The look of website is a highly customised.

Website Design For Steve Calder Cambridge

screenshot of web site design for: Steve Calder - Journalist, Cambridge

Steve Calder is a freelance journalist and his normal website designer was not familiar with designing websites for good search engine rankings. He wanted a clean, crisp, search engine friendly website to showcase his work that could be maintained by his normal web designer. Steve is a wordsmith but did not have experience with writing for search engines - so the first thing we discussed was the differences between writing text for marketing and search engines. From that Steve then decided on the keywords he wished to target then he wrote his text content. I designed a new web site template to suit the brief. Since then the site has been maintained and adapted by Steve's normal web designer to good effect.

New Property Purchasers Directory Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire

screenshot of web site design for: New Property Purchasers Directory, Waltham Cross, Herts

www.newpropertypurchasersdirectory.co.uk. This is a new and unique venture. The New Property Purchasers Directory is a place to allow individual property purchasers to band together to benefit from group discounts on new properties. You remain the sole purchaser of your property but get a bulk purchase discount as others are buying property at the sametime as you. Very clever idea!

Colin Cleaver, whose inspiration this website is, came to us in a bit of a jam. He had the website created by another company but had run into some problems. The website has been put together using a number of software packages but the site had been hacked before it went live. The software developer was no longer available to help and the hosting company had disabled the service as a result of the hacking. Colin came to us to see if we could salvage his website.

New Property Purchasers Directory has now been restored and is now at least as good as it was, using the original software. We redesigned the front end web pages to be much more in tune with the look of the backend application.

Website Design For CMO Translations

screenshot of web site design for: CMO Translations - English, Spanish and Catalan translation services

CMO Translations was founded by Carla Mengual Oltra in 2004 and is based in Hamburg, Germany.

CMO Translations provides English, German, Spanish and Catalan translation services.

They do General and Specialised Document Translation – small documents including: birth certificate translation, food menu translation, medical translation, etc…to large specialised texts such as brochure translation, deeds translation, manuals translation, etc...

CMO Translations also provides a Proof Reading and Editing service and a Website translation service.

Carla had a particular look in mind for her company's website - she wanted a youthful modern design. It was to be mainly white featuring either blue or green (green worked out best as blue did not work as well as the design was to include flags), large photos provided by Carla, tabbed navigation and a simple logo using the company name. The website design was to be search engine friendly.

Carla provided all the text (I have no idea if the Spanish pages are correct - Carla is the expert here - I just put the words in place.)

The website was designed using HTML and CSS, the tab navigation was a challenge but it is all achieved using CSS (no javascript or tables here in a bid to remain as accessible as possible). The website was designed and created from nothing in under 3 weeks. As for search engines try "english to spanish language translation in hamburg" in google.

National Late Breaks

screenshot of web site design for: Secure Your Fertiliser by NaCTSO (The National Counter Terrorism Security Office), London

www.nationallatebreaks.co.uk. This is a holiday home website. "It is your one stop UK Holiday Property Directory. Whatever you are looking for, whether its self-catering, camping and caravanning, bed and breakfast, apartments, parks and hotels they are all featured on these pages."

This project was a little bit different as the current owners of the site inherited a working website based on properties in Devon and Cornwall. The site did not look anything like they wanted it to and didn't really provide the searches and facilities that they wanted to go national. So they were looking for a complete facelift to change the appearance of the site and provide maximum search engine optimisation opportunities, plus an upgrade to the database web application running in the background. They also wanted to maintain the site themselves after it was upgraded as they had some familiarity with HTML and Dreamweaver so they needed the code restructured to make it easy for them to do this. The system is PHP and the database MySQL.

They provide their clients with an outsourced solution for the processing and collection of periodic payments, which increases efficiency and reduces their clients costs.

Epsilis redesigned their website based on their rebranded printwork (featuring some excellent photos using the apple theme). The website was designed including Disability Accessibility best practices and we feel it has a really smart look.

RNM Supplies

screenshot of web site design for: RNM Supplies - Discount Office Supplies Online, Hertfordshire

www.rnmsupplies.co.uk are a new online stationery (or is it stationary!) and office supplies company. This is a competitive business and they are using a backend system to manage the supply of products so Nick and Nathan needed a set of search engine friendly web pages to draw in the custom. I explained how to make the best of the search engines and pointed out that the competitive market is going to make it difficult to get high rankings and that google is unlikely to give a new site the rankings it deserves for at least 6 months in the face of such competition. With this in mind the website was launched in March 2007, it has around 15 front end pages that have been search engine optimised and a Blog. The Blog is used primarily to allow Nick and Nathan to add their own pages to the site in the shape of news items and informative articles. I also did some branding of the back end products system.

www.aapt.co.uk. Alex Adams offers a Personal Trainer Service. This includes gym training, home or office training and outdoor training. Alex takes a holistic approach and will look at diet and nutrition as well as posture.

Alex had a go at designing his own website but could not get the professional look he was after. So he approached us with his draft web sirte designs to see what we could do. Alex had a colour scheme and a look in mind - "Black, Electric blue and Silver, Modern and sleek (metalics etc)" - and had developed his own logo. I must admit black web pages pages was a new departure for us and getting a workable blue was a bit troublesome but I think it has worked out well.

"I'm glad I employed Epsilis to design my web site as they made the process really simple for me. All aspects were completed very quickly and provided a comprehensive web design that I am really happy with. Far better than I could have done myself."

Drakes enviable reputation is built on the company’s experience of working with local authorities, magistrates’ courts, central government agencies, and more than 500 private sector clients.

The requirement was to produce a professional website, that worked effectively in the search engines and met accessibility requirements. The site included an online Warrant Generator and an online Repossession Order Generator to allow Drakes' clients to get quick responses to their needs. We also created template web pages for Drakes to use within their intranet.

Incredit

Incredit is a registered charity providing help and assistance to a variety of individuals seeking to develop a business. Their client groups cover a broad sweep of those facing the biggest barriers to success in enterprise: women, young people (16-30), people from black and minority ethnic communities, people with disabilities, social enterprises, offenders and ex-offenders.

They had a corporate brand in mind already - the rather clever use of the rounded squares - which runs through everything they print. So we designed the web site around this motif and we are rather pleased with the end result. We designed the website throughout using CSS to provide maximum accessibility. The website incorporated a private area which houses an extensively searchable database of relevant service providers.

"Thank you for enhancing this website in a very short space of time "

Bishop Creighton House Settlement wanted a cleanly presented straightforward site to support their charitable activities at the community centre and out in the Hammersmith and Fulham area.

To aid accessibility the web site is designed using style sheets for content positioning rather than using tables, all text content resizes with the visitors browser text size settings and the site pages scale to fit the browser window.

"I'm really happy to provide a testimonial: I found working with you very helpful and supportive. As you know, we didn't have much IT expertise in-house, and it was vital to have someone who talked us through it in a way we could easily understand. I especially appreciated the support and advice around things like accessibility, and legal issues like the privacy policy. Your response to my hundreds of queries was fast and helpful, and I also appreciated your willingness to make the hundreds of small changes as we went through the process! Thanks for all your help"

Finance 4 U

screenshot of web site design for: Finance 4 U, Welwyn, Herts

Finance4u is a Mortgage Broker specialising in Self Certification Mortgages and Adverse Credit Mortgages. They provide a mortgage and loans service with no broker fees. They specialise in Mortgages for the Self Employed and others unable to prove income for reasons of poor credit history or through inability to prove income are traditionally unable to obtain a mortgage.

Site owner Richard Lodge had spent quite a lot of money on having the site designed by a web design company and even more money with a specialist search engine optimisation company but had saw no improvement in search engine performance. He asked us to review his site to see if there was any obvious reason why this was the case. We showed Richard how search engine optimisation and web design are closely linked and cannot be done sensibly as 2 separate activities. We took over the site maintenance and revamped the HTML coding and the site content to appeal to the visitors and search engines more effectively. We have also assisted Richard with his Google Adwords pay per click campaign. After a couple of months the site started to show significant improvements in the search engine rankings in a very competitive market - this is a difficult market so we had to go for searches using Hertfordshire to get good results. (Try "self cert mortgages hertfordshire" or "self employed mortgages hertfordshire" in Google.) We did a regular search engine review and optimisation project to improve the search engine ratings further.

Site owner Richard Lodge commented "I have tried the new adwords campaign, we were top of the class and I am pleased with the response"

Sterry Communications

screenshot of web site design for: Sterry, Welwyn, Hertfordshire

We were responsible for the design and construction of 3 versions of the Sterry Communications website over 6 years up to the takeover of the company.

The last version was a complete overhaul of the look, structure and content of the web site. Included in the site upgrade was an implementation of the W3C accessibility guidelines. The web site featured Sterry's product ranges based on supplier and on target markets. New features include news management and management of customer support materials in the form of FAQ's and product manual downloads.

"Since updating our site with Epsilis, we have had a large increase in visitors. This is mostly due to the increased content and regular news updates that can be included through the content management management software. We have recently received a large order from a enquiry generated from the site who researched our company from the website before contacting us. Working with Epsilis to complete the web site has been easy."

Morrisby Organisation

Morrisby are leaders in psychometric assessments for career advice and guidance.

www.morrisby.com includes extensive career advice information and multiple search mechanisms to help select careers or further education. The requirement was for a new website design based around a new brochure with a very visual home page and business like internal pages. All the website content is manageable using the standard edition of our epecentre Content Management software

"We wanted a site that was attractive but business-like appearance and allows users uncomplicated access to the many pages of information we provide. Other important factors were that the new site had to be available within a fixed time frame and once up and running, it should be readily accessible and quick to update. Epsilis were selected as the supplier because they were able to meet all the criteria. From a basic outline of these needs, Epsilis quickly understood our requirements and offered a series of design proposals. This included advice on the structure of the site to ensure easy navigation and compatibility with a range of browsers.
The Content Management Consol has proved a rapid and effective system for managing the site. It allows us to make our own day-to-day changes by editing text, changing and inserting tables and images, as required. Routine control of the site remains with us but at the same time, there is telephone support as and when needed. Throughout the project, the Epsilis team have been readily available to ensure the project was on time and to our complete satisfaction. Within days of the website going live, we were receiving compliments on the design, the speed and of course, the content."

Fast Tomato

Fast Tomato - the new education and careers web service from The Morrisby Organisation. Morrisby are leaders in psychometric assessments for career advice and guidance and already offer the highly popular UKcoursefinder.com site. This is an extensive search mechanism and guide to Higher Education in the UK. Now comes Fast Tomato - a service designed for schools and FE Colleges throughout the UK.

Fast Tomato will help guide students from the age of 14 upwards, through their school options, further and higher education choices and career decisions. The Service provides personalised help on education and career choices geared to the individual student's preferences and abilities. There are facilities for schools to tailor the system to the options and courses they offer. Careers advisers also have access to on-line student summaries that allow them to monitor and assist the research and choices of each of their students. If you have teenage children they may be using this web site at school.

Our brief was to create the design and build the initial version of this innovative new schools service. The brief was wide ranging. As well as dealing with the extensive applications needed to support all the services, it was essential to provide a web site that would appeal to students of various ages [from early teens upwards] as well as their teachers. This was achieved using a range of original artwork for characters that appear on the site and the concept of using "skins" on the site.

Simply put, the user is able to select the appearance of the web site they prefer from a range of "skins". This is the first time, that we are aware of, that this concept has been implemented in such a way onto a web site. Initially only a small number of "skins" will be available but the structure is in place for adding more as required.
