North Herts CENTRE For Voluntary Service

www.nhcvs.co.uk. North Herts Centre for Voluntary Service (NHCVS) are a Charity who run various projects in the North Herts area. They provide advice on volunteering and funding, run the Furniture Link community project in Letchworth, run the Respite Playshemes in Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth amongst many other worthy projects.
Jacquie Hime, Director of NHCVS came to us after some bad experiences with trying to get their website done very cheaply. The website was incomplete and did not allow for accessibility requirements. There were also problems with the hosting and domain set up.
We redesigned and completely recoded the web pages to allow for accessibility requirements and to be more user friendly. We have resolved the issues with the hosting and domains and the site is now up and running. We have recently trained Jacquie and other NHCVS staff to maintain the site themselves which they are now actively doing.
"I am really impressed, I think it now looks really good. I will be showing the trustees on Monday just to see if there is anything they would like to add/comment on. Thank you so much for sorting everything out as I am aware that you had several mountains to climb to get us to this stage." Jacquie Hime Executive Director - North Herts CVS

Website Designed For Baily Thomas Trust

www.bailythomas.org.uk. The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund is a registered charity which was established primarily to aid the research into learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected by learning disability by making grants to voluntary organisations working in this field. They consider under learning disability the conditions generally referred to as severe learning difficulties, together with autism. In this area, they consider projects concerning children or adults.
We developed a web site design from scratch including logo and branding. Disability Accessibility was a key requirement. Included within the web site is a complex form allowing organisations to apply to Baily Thomas for grants.
"At our last meeting the Trustees reiterated how pleased they were with the site and thought it looked excellent! "
Ann Cooper, Trust Manager

Website Designed For The Haymakers Survey

www.thehaymakerssurvey.com "The Haymakers Survey – a unique and mysterious project about climate change, deforestation, poaching and pollution. Let’s look back 200 years to the industrial revolution. Imagine people like Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth and William Turner deeply concerned about the potential impact of the industrial age on our Earth! What if they met in secret on Christmas Day in 1822 as the Blakeware Set with other heroes from across the world and left us something magical and enchanted – ‘The Haymakers Survey!’ What if a romantic poet from that time, Charles Lamb, recorded everything in his journal." The Haymakers Survey is in fact a novel by Chrissie Daines, a new writer.
This is a very interesting project from the perspective of what Chrissie has set out to achieve as well as what she wanted on her website. ln addition to the normal website pages, there is a survey (using open source software) which has been skinned to match the site design, plus 3 blogs (provided within the hosting set up) used to provide relevant news, feedback and a bonus for people who make it to the end of the "Survey".
In addition Chrissie has been very active on You Tube and elsewhere creating associated materials.
"I'm so glad you are doing my website"

Mark Payne came to me with a logo and a general idea of the design he was looking for, for this new website. The result, a clean, simple design that takes its guide from the logo. The images were sourced by Mark from an online photo site. The website has been revamped at the beginning of 2009 so that it caters for mulitple regions and can now easily be expanded as the company moves into new areas and a Jobs Advertising mechanism has been built by one of my long standing colleagues - Mark Hudson of www.seventhwavedesign.com

Jacquie Hime, Director, NHCVS

Website Designed For Letchworth Eagles Y.F.C

letchwortheagles.org.uk is a website we have sponsored for some years now for the Letchworth Garden City Eagles Youth Football Club.

All the boys teams are entered in the Royston Crow Youth League , the girls teams are entered in the Herts Girls League. The club is affiliated to the Hertfordshire Football Association. The LGC Eagles are proud to be awarded the Football Association Charter Standard Club. The club also hosts a Saturday morning Soccer School and runs regular 5 aside competitions ..
The web site covers the full range of activities of the club including merchandising, regular competitions and events. Each team have their own section of the web site - some teams provide weekly updates with match reports and photos, others are less active but all support for the club is completely voluntary so time is at a premium for some of the team managers.

Incredit

Incredit is a registered charity providing help and assistance to a variety of individuals seeking to develop a business. Their client groups cover a broad sweep of those facing the biggest barriers to success in enterprise: women, young people (16-30), people from black and minority ethnic communities, people with disabilities, social enterprises, offenders and ex-offenders.
They had a corporate brand in mind already - the rather clever use of the rounded squares - which runs through everything they print. So we designed the web site around this motif and we are rather pleased with the end result. We designed the website throughout using CSS to provide maximum accessibility. The website incorporates a private area which houses an extensively searchable database of relevant service providers.
"Thank you for enhancing this website in a very short space of time "
Kate Belinis, Head of Operations, Incredit
Incredit Limited, Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Bishop Creighton House

Bishop Creighton House Settlement wanted a cleanly presented straightforward site to support their charitable activities at the community centre and out in the Hammersmith and Fulham area.
To aid accessibility the web site is designed using style sheets for content positioning rather than using tables, all text content resizes with the visitors browser text size settings and the site pages scale to fit the browser window.
All pages of the web site are manageable through our epecentre content management software package.
"I'm really happy to provide a testimonial: I found working with you very helpful and supportive. As you know, we didn't have much IT expertise in-house, and it was vital to have someone who talked us through it in a way we could easily understand. I especially appreciated the support and advice around things like accessibility, and legal issues like the privacy policy. Your response to my hundreds of queries was fast and helpful, and I also appreciated your willingness to make the hundreds of small changes as we went through the process! Thanks for all your help"

What is good web design?
There are many possible answers to this question as people's personal tastes, likes, dislikes and opinions enter the discussion.
What can you do with your web site:
The justification for a web site is likely to be different for each company but should be based upon the company's business needs and how the internet might satisfy some of these specific needs. So in some respects a generic list of benefits of a web site could be approaching the problem from the wrong direction. However it does serve as a basis for discussion.
